OK, now my iPod is really starting to fuck with me...

Last week, it was masturbation.

Today, back-to-back?

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
Pearl Jam - Life Wasted

Let's roll out some lyrics, shall we?

Crazy
I remember when, I remember, I remember when I lost my mind
There was something so pleasant about that place.
Even your emotions had an echo
In so much space

And when you're out there
Without care,
Yeah, I was out of touch
But it wasn't because I didn't know enough
I just knew too much

Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
Does that make me crazy?
probably

And I hope that you are having the time of your life
But think twice, that's my only advice

Come on now, who do you, who do you, who do you, who do you think you are,
Ha ha ha bless your soul
You really think you're in control

Well, I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
I think you're crazy
Just like me

My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I want to be like them
Ever since I was little, ever since I was little it looked like fun
And it's no coincidence I've come
And I can die when I'm done

Maybe I'm crazy
Maybe you're crazy
Maybe we're crazy
Probably

Life Wasted
You're always saying that there's something wrong
I'm starting to believe it's your plan all along
Death came around, forced to hear its song
And know tomorrow can't be depended on.

I seen the home inside your head
All locked doors and unmade beds.
Open sores unattended
Let me say just once that

I have faced it, a life wasted, I'm never going back again.
I escaped it, a life wasted,I'm never going back again.
Having tasted, a life wasted, I'm never going back again.

The world awaits just up the stairs
Leave the pain for someone else
Nothing back there for you to find
Or was it you, you left behind?

You're always saying you're too weak to be strong
You're harder on yourself than just about anyone.
Why swim the channel just to get this far?
Halfway there, why would you turn around?

Darkness comes in waves, tell me, why invite it to stay?
You're warm with negativity,
Yes, comfort is an energy,
But why let the sad song play?

I have faced it, a life wasted, I'm never going back again.
I escaped it, a life wasted, I'm never going back again.
Having tasted, a life wasted, I'm never going back again.
Oh I erased it, a life wasted, I'm never going back again.

Just what is the message here? You know, it's one thing for my iPod to tell me to masturbate more. But what now?

Is my iPod trying to tell me something?

On my commute home today, the following two songs came up back-to-back:
The Vapors - Turning Japanese
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta

Well, then.

If I owned Green Day's Longview, would that have been next?

That's the "songs about masturbation" trifecta right there.

(And no, that Divinyls POS that I was forced to endure endlessly in 1990 doesn't count. No subtlety.)

I wonder what my drive to work will have to tell me tomorrow.

I Shuffle, Therefore I Am

Working on cleaning out my basement, now that it's not my second office any more. This kind of tedium requires loud music and beer. Well, after I finish this cup of coffee.

Let's see what iTunes has in store for us today.

Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose
Apologies to Tenacious D and the Zep, but this is the greatest and best song in the world. Also, this is kind of a cheat, because I started the shuffle here on purpose. What a way to get going. All random from here on out, though.

Rush -
Dreamline
We're only immortal for a limited time.

Outkast - Hey Ya!

Counting Crows - Angels of the Silences
One of my favorites of theirs. We're off to a rollickin' start!

Camper Van Beethoven - Skinhead Stomp

Cat Stevens - Another Saturday Night
I got some money and I wanna get laid...

Wait, what? You're sure it doesn't go like that?

Pearl Jam - In My Tree
Wave to all my friends, yeah
They don't seem to notice me, no

Beck - Clap Hands
I'll take my broken bell, and make it ring like a million churches
I'll scratch that kind of itch, down in the ditch and switch my plates out
I'll drive to San Francisco, death to disco take my shirt off

Did I mention we've got a hell of a set going here?!?!?!

Morrissey - November Spawned a Monster
Oh, one fine day
Let it be soon
She won't be rich or beautiful
But she'll be walking your streets
In the clothes that she went out
And chose for herself

Rihanna - Pon de Replay
Shake it 'til the moon becomes the sun

Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I wanna be like them

Just a beautiful song about depression. If that makes sense.

Throwing Muses - Shimmer
Shake barrels of whiskey down my throat I still see straight

and

My tongue is filled with sugar and my back is filled with pain
Your tongue is on my shoulder and there's nothing on my brain

Another song probably in my all time top 10.

Jerry Garcia Band - Dear Prudence
A wonderful rendition.

Μικης Θεοδωρακης - Μαργαριτα Μαργαρω
In my top five Greek songs.

Cake - Italian Leather Sofa
This song is not excerptable. Too much genius, too much snark, too much cynicism and venom to tray to capture in just a couple lines. And one of the best "drunken trumpet" solos ever. He just slurs his notes so perfectly.

she doesn't care, whether or not he's an island.
she doesn't care, just as long as his ship's coming in.
she doesn't care, whether or not he's an island.
they laugh, they make money, he's got a gold watch.
she's got a silk dress and healthy breasts
that bounce on his italian leather sofa.

she doesn't care, whether or not he's a good man.
she doesn't care, just as long as she still has her friends.
she doesn't care, whether or not he's an island.
they laugh, they make money, he's got a gold watch.
she's got a silk dress and healthy breasts
that bounce on his italian leather sofa.

she's got a serrated edge that she moves back and forth.
it's such a simple machine. she doesn't have to use force.
when she get what she wants
she puts the rest on a tray in a zip-loc bag
in the freezer.

she doesn't care, whether or not he's an island.
she doesn't care, just as long as his ship's coming in.
she doesn't care, whether or not he's an island.
they laugh, they make money, he's got a gold watch.
she's got a silk dress and healthy breasts
that bounce on his italian leather sofa.

Mark Sandman - Tomorrow
We packed the past in the back, it gives good traction
Forward motion is enough, for satisfaction
We're not waiting, waiting, waiting around
For something to happen
No waiting, waiting, waiting around
For something to happen

I'm sure glad I'm documenting this non-stop awesomeness.

Tori Amos - Northern Lad
My favorite of hers. Just a stab in the heart. With a twist.

Dropkick Murphys - Shipping Out To Boston
I just had to run up to do a jig around The Wife in the kitchen. You know, because when a song rocks this hard, you have to do a jig. It's in the Constitution.

Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict a Riot
Wow. Second shuffle ever, and a repeat already. You know, only 5000 or so songs available in this playlist...

Rush - Red Barchetta

I swear, I'm not cheating here...

Judas Priest - The Green Manalishi
Those notes at the end, live, are out of this world. Just shouldn't be possible with that kind of power.

They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo doo-doo-doo-doot

Booker T & The MGs - Hip Hug-Her
Much better than Green Onions. Not enough people think that way. They're wrong.

SRV - Come On (Part III)

U2 - Love & Peace

Big Bag Voodoo Daddy - I Like It

The Negro Problem - MacArthur Park
Someone left their crack out in the rain
And I don't think I can take it
'Cuz it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have the recipe agaiiiiiiin...

Dean Martin - Mambo Italiano
Hey goomba, I love-a how you dance the rhumba
But take-a some advice paisano, learn-a how to mambo
If you gonna be a square you never gonna go nowhere

Gary Jules - Mad World
Haunting, truly haunting. This is why covers exist. Puts the original to shame.

Μικης Θεοδωρακης - Παραπονο
Another gorgeous song. A true patriot, a true genius, a true poet, and a phenomenal composer.

Francine Reid - Wild Women Don't Get The Blues
Sing it!!!!

Jerry Garcia Band - Tangled Up In Blue
Another song they do better than original, by a mile.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Mambo Swing
Just try not to move your ass to this one!

Pearl Jam - Porch
You should see me air guitar while cleaning. One of their best.

Gogol Bordelo - Immigrant Punk

White Stripes - Ball & Biscuit
It's quite possible that I'm your third man, girl
But it's a fact that I'm the seventh son
Right now you could care less about me
But soon enough you will care by the time I'm done

Wail on that guitar, baby. Beat the ever-loving piss out of it. Yeah, you know what I like...

Lyle Lovett - If I Had a Boat
Oh. Yes.

Tonto he was smarter, and one day said Kemosabe
You can kiss my ass I bought a boat I'm heading out to sea

Mark Sandman - Justine
Can a song just ooze sex? Yes, yes it can.

And should "sex" and "ooze" perhaps not be in the same sentence? It's something to consider.

AC/DC - Live Wire
One of the best build-ups to any rock song. Bass. Guitar 1. Guitar 2. Hi-hat. Rock.

Johnny Cash - Bird on a Wire
Wow, the first downbeat song all night. And yet, it has all the power of anything I played so far.

Mark Sandman - Wig

Flaming Lips - Do You Realize?
...that you have the most beautiful face.

Ani DiFranco - Gravel
Women who rock? Yes. Yes sir. This song is an amazing shot across the bow, and an admission of vulnerability. Just so much said here.

And does she play the HELL out of that guitar!

Pearl Jam - Footsteps
I've got scratches
All over my arms
One for each day
Since I fell apart

A B-Side that stands up to any of their album material. Killer vocal performance by Eddie.

OK, I'll stop this here before I kill the Blogspot.
