It's expensive to be poor.
Poverty 101: We'll start with the basics. Like food: You don't have a car to get to a supermarket, much less to Costco or Trader Joe's, where the middle class goes to save money. You don't have three hours to take the bus.

So you buy groceries at the corner store, where a gallon of milk costs an extra dollar. A loaf of bread there costs you $2.99 for white. For wheat, it's $3.79. The clerk behind the counter tells you the gallon of leaking milk in the bottom of the back cooler is $4.99. She holds up four fingers to clarify. The milk is beneath the shelf that holds beef bologna for $3.79. A pound of butter sells for $4.49. In the back of the store are fruits and vegetables. The green peppers are shriveled, the bananas are more brown than yellow, the oranges are picked over.

(At a Safeway on Bradley Boulevard in Bethesda, the wheat bread costs $1.19, and white bread is on sale for $1. A gallon of milk costs $3.49 -- $2.99 if you buy two gallons. A pound of butter is $2.49. Beef bologna is on sale, two packages for $5.)

Harry Reid has got to fucking go! DDay tears into him like nobody's business.

Newt Gingrich - still a lying racist scumbag.

No big fan of Pelosi either, but it seems that maybe she is right on this one? Still not sure how to read all this stuff.

Ahhh, Republican TV pundits. So criminal, so insane, so stupid.

Krugman with another quote of the year candidate.
And the truth is that the Reaganauts were a pretty grotesque bunch too. Look for the golden age of conservative intellectualism in America, and you keep going back, and back, and back — and eventually you run up against William Buckley in the 1950s declaring that blacks weren’t advanced enough to vote, and that Franco was the savior of Spanish civilization.

McCain, still a deceitful douche.

Wingnuts - always pissing their pants in fear. And apparently unaware of Google.

Ways to reduce the cost of health care.

Clarkson DESTROYS the new Honda Insight. Brutal. (And here's a review of the 2001 insight by someone who just bought it used)

The Sports Guy goes head-to-head with Malcolm Gladwell, hilarity ensues. Part 1, 2, 3.

The Sports Guy on the Red Sox, steroids, and explaining it to his kid.

Best hair ever? No, I think that still belongs to that old prom picture I'm too lazy to look for now. Still... That site has some crazy stuff. Like what the hell is going on here???? Matching - just say no. And this, oh man. It caused quite a kerfuffle at another site I visit. But that's another story entirely.

Hello there!

Well, now, my neglected little blog. What shall we do with you?

I think it's time to bust a move.

I've got books and CDs, TV, sports, politics, and all sorts of random thoughts that have been piling up.

We'll get you up to speed in short order...

Missing link

Forgot this in the linkdump. Posnanski with a great post on Tiger, the Masters, his early days in the sportswriting business, and being assigned to the Augusta despite knowing nothing about golf.

Linka dinka doo

Mark Cuban gets it right.

Bill James on the Orioles and other things.

Tweak your Google Image searches.

In praise of strong coffee.

The next bubble to burst?

Beating back the the "lower taxes will raise federal revenue" bullshit, one blog post at a time.

Worst wresting character ever. I can't believe this is real, but that guy was apparently a real WWF character. Is that supposed to be intimidating? Should I be afraid he's going to get glitter on me?

"We cannot have a better first person to attack health care reform than someone who ran a company that ripped off the government of hundreds of millions of dollars." Awesome. A criminal former health care exec is the best representative the right wing can find to fight health care reform.

Republicans - criminally insane? Or inveterate liars?

1619 federal charges against The Hair.

Do you people know how embarrassing it is to have George Will be one of your fraternity brothers?

Joe the Dumber strikes again. Christ these people are ridiculous.

Yes, this is why I see 5-6 troopers and sheriffs a day on my commute. Tickets and fines are the only revenue a lot of municipalities can increase quickly and easily.

Best April Fools stunt ever

I have to admit I got suckered into this big time, and I never fall for this shit. Very well done, boys. That's why you've been on my must-watch list since day 1.

The tone, the pacing, the cross-talk - EXACTLY like the show itself. A+ for effort. And F- to me.

Life is just a fantasy, can you live this fantasy life - the conclusioning

I have the skillz that pay the billz!

I'm sure you have been jonesing to find out what happened since my last fantasy summary post.

After a frustrating bye week, the Fucknecks kicked some major ass, dispatching Fridge's Authoriteh with ease in the semis, and ruthlessly crushing Toast's Problem Child in the finals.

I had a 2 point lead going into Sunday night's big game, with Darren Sproles still to play, while Toast had Eddie Royal. This truly could have gone either way. Except... DENVER SUCKS! It turned into a laugher as Sproles relieved LDT and scored two garbage time touchdowns and a accumulated an Imperial buttload of yards.

And when, you ask, did I make the genius move of putting Sproles in my lineup? Oh, about 5 minutes after I picked him up the day before the game, prepping my roster early because I'd be on a plane when the games started!

I'm a genius, I tell you. Anyway, real happy with this one. League's point leader, overall best record, and now champion. All after losing my #1 pick 8 minutes into the season. Who would have thunk that juggling Matt Ryan, Kyle Orton, Matt Cassel, and Joe Flacco would lead me to a good fantasy year?

My team MVP? Tough call, but I'll go with Michael Turner, because Brandon Jacobs was hurt too much this year.

In my other league, I... WON!!!

Yes, Learn to Logic rode a 6th seed (7-7 regular season) playoff invite to my second title in three leagues.

The Corn Snakes went down in a blaze of suck, with only her kicker and Defense scoring in double digits.

Hey, that Sproles character seems familiar... and you know your league has a whack scoring system when the Cutlerfucker can score you 43 points with an 8745-interception performance.

Fantasy is always fun, if for nothing else than opportunity to talk smack with your leaguemates, and March can't come soon enough.

Is it baseball season yet? I need to find myself a second league, because being in just Toast's Blue States Baseball League won't be enough.

March can't get here soon enough

In the spirit of Christmas, here are some baseball links.

Shysterball on the silly annual exercise of bemoaning the Yankee payroll. Smart comments too.

On a related note, people who are bitching about Yankee spending don't seem to be mentioning the fact that $77 million came off the books this offseason.

Yankees by the numbers.

On the ethics of not signing Barry Bonds. Can we please not endure this line of questioning again this season?

Is it getting drafty? Yes, yes it is.

Sorry, the Yankees haven't been the "team to beat" in a while now. Yes, I like that they signed two very good players still in their twenties for a change, but let's calm down here. Soon we'll have Buster Olney and Toast exclaiming "the Yankees could score 1000 runs this year!" again. Just like every year.

Speaking of Buster, many good points here.

Doug Glanville on winter ball. Very well done.

Give this man a job.

Projecting the Mets.

Phew. Merry Christmas, everyone!

With his name in lights...

JoePoz makes the cover of SI.

Well-deserved.

Yikes

I've always thought the sports memorabilia market was insane, but COME ON!!!!

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

Boooooo! Yaaaaaaaay!

Unfortunately, Fire Joe Morgan is gone.

But, in a fantastic development, Rob Neyer is finally free! No more of that Insider bullshit. He's one of my favorite SABR guys. I have almost all his books—solo and collaborative—and find him entertaining and informative. Good times.

Brilliant

As Posnanski always is.

Seriously, you need to read this guy. You don't even have to care about sports. You need to read this guy.

On Tiger.

UPDATE: Someone in comments there posted this link, about Tiger's days playing at the Navy course with his father. Some people just don't deserve to live. I think Tiger should go buy that course and make it "Black Only." Just for shits and giggles.

Link dump

Busy busy busy, and 3 larger posts in draft mode, so here are a few interesting things:

This is absolutely stunning. I want to see this happen in person, because I still don't believe it.

Living green + gender. Brilliant post.

Every time you think the wingnuts have reached the depths of stupid and immoral, you find out they just keep digging. Determined lot, they. In a sane nation, this would be beyond comprehension.

Wingnuttia in full bloom.

Your grocery bill is only going to get worse. In other news, my brewing supply shop has 5 varieties of hops. Last year at this time, it was 25.

Our soldiers are killing themselves at alarming rates.

Arson up, trending in correlation with bankruptcy and foreclosure. Who needs jingle mail? Just burn the fucking thing down!

Another most excellent FJM beatdown.

Date-rape drugging thwarted by intended victim, aided by perpetrator's own stupidity. Ahhh, to be judge, jury, and executioner for these fucking scumbags. Now, I wouldn't call an ice dancer a "celebrity," but clearly she's not "just" JoAnne in Des Moines. That I've seen this at multiple blogs indicates that the fact that this happened to "somebody" might lead to hope about increased awareness... fuck it, who am I kidding. She was smart, and she got lucky. I can't express enough how predation makes me boil. Rrrrrrgh.

If there was ever a post that perfectly attains the balance between offense and satire, this is it. To the uninitiated, this post would probably be considered a ZOMG!!! SEXIST and HE'S MINIMIZING DOMESTIC VIOLENCE post. Sorry, but no. This is pitch-perfect commentary.

In honor of what could be the best NBA playoffs is history (following a season that got me back to about a 60% interest level in the sport), we have the Duncan Face.

CBS News should just shut down.

The Army is more strict on fat soldiers than it is on criminal ones. Of course, BMI is an accurate indicator of... nothing.

What a beautiful sentence

FJM, defining "dirtbag":

Men of questionable moral character, who wear lots of cologne and get fake tans and spike their hair and flash gang signs at the camera when their picture is taken even though they grew up quite white-ly in Dumont, NJ and think that pec size is fucking key to getting chicks and had their most spiritual moment ever at an Everclear concert in 1998 when the 'Clear played "Father of Mine" acoustic and it fucking rocked and they have a good buddy who's serving 18 months for sexual assault but he was totally innocent and someday they hope to like start their own club in Miami where the music would be awesome and there's dollar-Jaeger-shot Tuesdays and it would be fucking tiiiiiight.

Sounds about right.

Blogrolling

I've updated the sports section of my blogroll.

I've been reading the latest additions for quite a while, but forgot to add them.

Fire Joe Morgan - the name alone would be enough, as Joe Morgan is the biggest idiot in the universe of color-guy idiots. But the snark and statistically logical goodness that backs up the truth behind the snark is what I love. This post is the perfect introduction, if you've never read them before. And here's another one.

Flotsam Media - I've already posted about the greatest blog post in the history of blogs. But they bring the funny and the true almost every day.

Shysterball - Just good damned commentary and news.

Vegas Watch - Comentary, odds, commentary on odds, links.

That is all.

Do they not play defense in college football?

Seriously, wtf?

And this. Why wasn't this game available on my TV? 74-62? Are you kidding me?

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Really, get over it.

I understand "image" and "marketing" and all that shit, but it really pisses me off that the media have been instructed to stop calling Georgia @ Florida the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party." And the media comply (well, except for a couple ESPN radio guys).

You can call it whatever you want, it doesn't change the fact that there are 100,000 people there, 90,000 of whom have been, um, partaking in the enjoyment of libations?

This phoniness will be the death of America. Just look at the last 6 years...

Reality check: people drink. Also? People fuck. Sometimes, people drink then fuck. It's a beautiful thing.

So... all you fundies, tight-asses, prudes, and kill-joys? Are you listening? Just get over it. Get over yourselves. In fact, why don't you just joins us, and enjoy your lives?
