Some TV thoughts
If you didn't watch SNL tonight, you must find the newest Andy Samberg piece. It may not be Lazy Sunday, but it's better than Dick in a Box. I'm sure it'll go widely viral, so it shouldn't be that difficult. I'll update this post as soon a there's a YouTube or other stable link. Just awesome.
UPDATE: Here it is!
The Wife and I got through episode 11 of Flight of the Conchords tonight. Just plain funny. Really, if you have On Demand, watch it. If you have Netflix, I'm sure the DVD set will be out soon, if it isn't already. Queueueueueue it up. Only one more episode to go. That makes us sad.
On the brighter side, Curb Your Enthusiasm has started again. We've only seen the first one, but it was great, as usual. "He knowingly fed us penis!"
The Wife heard at school that last Monday's episode of Two and a Half Men was really offensive. Her first thought was "and how is that any different?" So we cranked the DVR up and watched it. Yes, we watch that show. I know it's much-maligned, but we find that even within the clichéd confines of the standard sitcom nowadays, there are always enough really good one-liners and outrageous situations that we laugh enough to make it worth the groaners. Sure enough, to us it was like any other episode. Some really funny shit, and some groaners.
Ugly Betty had a bone-chilling ending. When the reality intruded on the fantasy, we were just stunned. Maybe we should have seen it coming, but damn. We both just turned and looked at each other, and I said "That was very well done." And Wife said "Yes, yes it was." She was getting a little emotional. Me, not so much. The room was just a little dusty though. And my contacts were getting dry. And, um, my allergies were acting up? Fuck you, I wasn't choked up at all.
That's it, so far. The DVR is still loaded though. Intermittent updates to follow.
For completely insane TV blogging, see Toast. I don't know how he and Mrs. Toast do it. But they watch pretty much everything.

In case you aren't following "Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader Tryouts" on CMT...
...our vice-president is someone named Candi Rice.
The Wife adds: "Even they have standards. She got cut."
And no, I'm not partaking in this particular TV delight. I'm in the basement watching the Yankees.
In The Wife's defense, it's been a veeeeery long week. And "Big Fat Greek Wedding" was in commercial break. So, she has that going for her...

It's not a bad workplace when....
Thursday, 6pm, still at your computer, hell of a day, and someone comes to your desk and hands you a beer and a cup of pretzels.
I work with a bunch of lushes.
Cool.

A question, and some football talk
How come ABC Sunday Night football gets a good song with an interesting mash-up of artists (50 Cent, Perry Farrell, and more), while the best NBC Sunday Night Football could come up with was Faith Hill doing a 78-year-old Joan Jett song? And MNF still has that fucking Hank Williams IVIVXICLMIXVMCLI catastrophe?
Anyway, one thing about not going to a football school is that I have no rooting interest in any team. I can enjoy the fun and energy of a good college game no matter who's playing.
And I'm excited about this USC-Nebraska game. I'm thinking USC blowout, which is always kinda fun. But if the Huskers make a game out of it, that's even better. If Nebraska wins, then I witness a huge upset, and I get to enjoy the collapse of all the punditry that not only has this USC team going undefeated like it's a given, they practically crowned them as one of the best teams of all time before the season even started.
So, anyway. I have no dog in this hunt. I don't even have a team that I sort of adopted over the years. I just want to see a good game.
After I finish all that typing about good games and such, they put up a stat that says the Huskers under Callahan are 0-5 against ranked teams. OK, so maybe no upset today.
Also, I'm just about to hit "publish" and USC takes its first play from scrimmage 50 yards on a run play. Yeah. What's the spread on this game? (brb...) USC -10? I think I'd give the points, and take the under (50.5).
Check that. 96 yards, 4 plays, TD. Take the over.

Lyle
Thank you, thank you, thank you, QuakerDave over at Shakesville, for pointing this out to me.
My second favorite song of all time, with some random shit interspersed.
I'll have to watch it again tomorrow, when I'm sober, to figure out why this even exists.
But tonight, feeling all drunk and sentimental? It's perfect.

Fuck you and the walker you rode in on...
Long but good workweek.
Today though, I had a KILLER sinus headache. No other sign of a cold or any illness, no congestion even, just a constant and very bad ache right between the bridge of my nose and just above my eyebrow. SUPER-concentrated pain. Excellent.
So on the way home, I stop at Eckerd. Bottle of Afrin sounds good right about now.
Find the aisle, go to the register. That took about 45 seconds.
Old lady at the register, fumbling through coupons. Oh boy. As if that's not bad enough, nothing seems to be happening. The clerk (also the manager) is going through the binder of UPC codes, not ringing anything up.
(Aside: the products on the counter? Milk, pudding cups, 4 spices [2 garlic salt, 2 chili powder], and a box of Magic Eraser. This is a pharmacy, remember, not a grocery store.)
(Aside 2: I am not exaggerating the times here. I promise.)
After about 3 minutes of nothing but the clerk searching through the inventory binder, she finds something. Scans the UPC. The register spits out some tape.
"And here's your raincheck for the raisins, ma'am."
BECAUSE RAISINS MUST BE ON FUCKING SALE AT ECKERD THIS WEEK!!
Shuffle through some more pages, about another minute. Eureka! Scan. Beep. Register prints something.
"And here's your raincheck for the lightbulbs, ma'am."
Did I mention the pharmacy part yet?
Back to the binder. Another minute. Do you have any idea how long a fucking minute is in "very tired with a severe headache" time? Found it! Scan. Beep. Register.
"And here's the raincheck for the" (I shit you not) "ant traps."
OK. 5+ minutes, we can start ringing out your milk and spices and pudding.
I want to cry. Or kill someone. I haven't decided yet.
Everything is bagged, and in the old witch's cart.
The register goes fuck-nutty. Starts spitting out tape like there's no tomorrow. Manager/clerk manages to stop it. But oops! Sale didn't take.
"I'm sorry ma'am. I need to scan your purchase again."
Does Eckerd sell guns? Because I sure need one right about now. Let me check the circular, maybe there's a coupon.
Out of the cart comes a quart of milk. A shaker of garlic salt. Another shaker of garlic salt. A shaker of chili powder. Another shaker of chili powder. A 4-pack of pudding cups. And a box of Magic Eraser.
Scan, scan, scan, scan, scan, scan, scan.
We are well over, literally, 9 minutes now. Not a single fucking "Mary to your register please," nothing. One register. One manager. One old bat and her "groceries," coupons, and fucking rainchecks.
That'll be $6.98.
I swear on the two or three things I hold sacred, if that woman had broken out a checkbook at that moment, I wouldn't be blogging right now unless my jail cell had a computer.
Phew. Going for cash. But still, after all of this, its took until she was actually asked for money for her to even think about, oh, I don't know, taking her wallet out of her purse. (Had the fucking coupons ready though.)
OK, feeble hand goes into purse. Feeble hand pulls out wallet. Feeble hand goes into the cash part. Pulls out a five. Hands it to clerk. Goes back into wallet. Pulls out a single. Hands it to clerk.
Uh-oh.
Don't you fucking THINK about going for the coins. Don't even do it. Please.
She thought about it. She opened the coin thingy. Took a glance. Apparently not enough, because she went for another dollar bill after a few seconds of contemplation.
I was covertly ready with a dollar bill in my hand (hidden in my pocket). I don't know if I would have actually gone through with it if she had dumped some coins on the counter trying to find 98 cents. I think I would have. But I don't know. I was this close to just collapsing onto the floor in the fetal position, silently whimpering to myself. It was one or the other, really.
But I just may have slapped that seventh dollar on the counter and said "here it is, put the 2 pennies in the GAP/TAP tray."
Honestly, no exaggeration, 15 minutes later I walked out of there with my $7.99 bottle of Afrin.
9 days out of 10, I would have put it down and gone to Target or Price Chopper half-way through that abortion of a shopping experience. But I was just so desperate, and so hopeful that it would all end, I stayed.
Stupid, stupid me.

I got nuttin'
Except work-work-work. But I'm diggin' it. More this weekend.
So, in lieu of me coming up with something original:
Does Fridge have a funny story to tell? Yes, yes he does.
And Toast has new furniture.

I Shuffle, Therefore I Am
Working on cleaning out my basement, now that it's not my second office any more. This kind of tedium requires loud music and beer. Well, after I finish this cup of coffee.
Let's see what iTunes has in store for us today.
Soundgarden - Jesus Christ Pose
Apologies to Tenacious D and the Zep, but this is the greatest and best song in the world. Also, this is kind of a cheat, because I started the shuffle here on purpose. What a way to get going. All random from here on out, though.
Rush - Dreamline
We're only immortal for a limited time.
Outkast - Hey Ya!
Counting Crows - Angels of the Silences
One of my favorites of theirs. We're off to a rollickin' start!
Camper Van Beethoven - Skinhead Stomp
Cat Stevens - Another Saturday Night
I got some money and I wanna get laid...
Wait, what? You're sure it doesn't go like that?
Pearl Jam - In My Tree
Wave to all my friends, yeah
They don't seem to notice me, no
Beck - Clap Hands
I'll take my broken bell, and make it ring like a million churches
I'll scratch that kind of itch, down in the ditch and switch my plates out
I'll drive to San Francisco, death to disco take my shirt off
Did I mention we've got a hell of a set going here?!?!?!
Morrissey - November Spawned a Monster
Oh, one fine day
Let it be soon
She won't be rich or beautiful
But she'll be walking your streets
In the clothes that she went out
And chose for herself
Rihanna - Pon de Replay
Shake it 'til the moon becomes the sun
Gnarls Barkley - Crazy
My heroes had the heart to lose their lives out on a limb
And all I remember is thinking, I wanna be like them
Just a beautiful song about depression. If that makes sense.
Throwing Muses - Shimmer
Shake barrels of whiskey down my throat I still see straight
and
My tongue is filled with sugar and my back is filled with pain
Your tongue is on my shoulder and there's nothing on my brain
Another song probably in my all time top 10.
Jerry Garcia Band - Dear Prudence
A wonderful rendition.
Μικης Θεοδωρακης - Μαργαριτα Μαργαρω
In my top five Greek songs.
Cake - Italian Leather Sofa
This song is not excerptable. Too much genius, too much snark, too much cynicism and venom to tray to capture in just a couple lines. And one of the best "drunken trumpet" solos ever. He just slurs his notes so perfectly.
she doesn't care, whether or not he's an island.
she doesn't care, just as long as his ship's coming in.
she doesn't care, whether or not he's an island.
they laugh, they make money, he's got a gold watch.
she's got a silk dress and healthy breasts
that bounce on his italian leather sofa.
she doesn't care, whether or not he's a good man.
she doesn't care, just as long as she still has her friends.
she doesn't care, whether or not he's an island.
they laugh, they make money, he's got a gold watch.
she's got a silk dress and healthy breasts
that bounce on his italian leather sofa.
she's got a serrated edge that she moves back and forth.
it's such a simple machine. she doesn't have to use force.
when she get what she wants
she puts the rest on a tray in a zip-loc bag
in the freezer.
she doesn't care, whether or not he's an island.
she doesn't care, just as long as his ship's coming in.
she doesn't care, whether or not he's an island.
they laugh, they make money, he's got a gold watch.
she's got a silk dress and healthy breasts
that bounce on his italian leather sofa.
Mark Sandman - Tomorrow
We packed the past in the back, it gives good traction
Forward motion is enough, for satisfaction
We're not waiting, waiting, waiting around
For something to happen
No waiting, waiting, waiting around
For something to happen
I'm sure glad I'm documenting this non-stop awesomeness.
Tori Amos - Northern Lad
My favorite of hers. Just a stab in the heart. With a twist.
Dropkick Murphys - Shipping Out To Boston
I just had to run up to do a jig around The Wife in the kitchen. You know, because when a song rocks this hard, you have to do a jig. It's in the Constitution.
Kaiser Chiefs - I Predict a Riot
Wow. Second shuffle ever, and a repeat already. You know, only 5000 or so songs available in this playlist...
Rush - Red Barchetta
I swear, I'm not cheating here...
Judas Priest - The Green Manalishi
Those notes at the end, live, are out of this world. Just shouldn't be possible with that kind of power.
They Might Be Giants - Istanbul (Not Constantinople)
Doo-doo-doo, doo-doo doo-doo-doo-doot
Booker T & The MGs - Hip Hug-Her
Much better than Green Onions. Not enough people think that way. They're wrong.
SRV - Come On (Part III)
U2 - Love & Peace
Big Bag Voodoo Daddy - I Like It
The Negro Problem - MacArthur Park
Someone left their crack out in the rain
And I don't think I can take it
'Cuz it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have the recipe agaiiiiiiin...
Dean Martin - Mambo Italiano
Hey goomba, I love-a how you dance the rhumba
But take-a some advice paisano, learn-a how to mambo
If you gonna be a square you never gonna go nowhere
Gary Jules - Mad World
Haunting, truly haunting. This is why covers exist. Puts the original to shame.
Μικης Θεοδωρακης - Παραπονο
Another gorgeous song. A true patriot, a true genius, a true poet, and a phenomenal composer.
Francine Reid - Wild Women Don't Get The Blues
Sing it!!!!
Jerry Garcia Band - Tangled Up In Blue
Another song they do better than original, by a mile.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy - Mambo Swing
Just try not to move your ass to this one!
Pearl Jam - Porch
You should see me air guitar while cleaning. One of their best.
Gogol Bordelo - Immigrant Punk
White Stripes - Ball & Biscuit
It's quite possible that I'm your third man, girl
But it's a fact that I'm the seventh son
Right now you could care less about me
But soon enough you will care by the time I'm done
Wail on that guitar, baby. Beat the ever-loving piss out of it. Yeah, you know what I like...
Lyle Lovett - If I Had a Boat
Oh. Yes.
Tonto he was smarter, and one day said Kemosabe
You can kiss my ass I bought a boat I'm heading out to sea
Mark Sandman - Justine
Can a song just ooze sex? Yes, yes it can.
And should "sex" and "ooze" perhaps not be in the same sentence? It's something to consider.
AC/DC - Live Wire
One of the best build-ups to any rock song. Bass. Guitar 1. Guitar 2. Hi-hat. Rock.
Johnny Cash - Bird on a Wire
Wow, the first downbeat song all night. And yet, it has all the power of anything I played so far.
Mark Sandman - Wig
Flaming Lips - Do You Realize?
...that you have the most beautiful face.
Ani DiFranco - Gravel
Women who rock? Yes. Yes sir. This song is an amazing shot across the bow, and an admission of vulnerability. Just so much said here.
And does she play the HELL out of that guitar!
Pearl Jam - Footsteps
I've got scratches
All over my arms
One for each day
Since I fell apart
A B-Side that stands up to any of their album material. Killer vocal performance by Eddie.
OK, I'll stop this here before I kill the Blogspot.
Let's see what iTunes has in store for us today.

Friday!!!!!!
Week 1 is in the books at the new place.
For those who don't know, I've worked for myself for 12 years. I got bought out, and now manage a new department. This is a good thing for two reasons. First, cash flow is someone else's problem, as long as they Cut The Check to me every two weeks. Second, I get to do what I am absolutely best at, and the three million other things that go along with small business ownership are off my plate. Withholdings, collection calls, accounting, blah blah blah blah blah. Not. My. Problem.
This is still a small company, people-wise, 40-ish I'd say. People are open to suggestions, people work together well, and seem to have fun.
I've found out who some of the hardest workers are, who some of the shirkers are, who plays the office drama, etc.
Now, to put together a hardware and software list...

I have arrived
My 881st visitor found me via a Bloglines search for "naked girls."
Oh, by the way, Britney Spears, porn, XXX, nude, Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton.

Some weekend linkage
Drive your car to death, save $30,000+. Exactly. Notice that all the "good bets" to make 200,000 miles are Hondas and Toyotas.
Interesting interview with John Cusack.
A wingnut makes some sense regarding his party's hypocrisy. Oh sure, there's a lot of "AHHH, TEH GAY!!!" in here, but he does come closer than most to getting it.
Kissing Suzy Kolber has its last commenter draft of the off-season, and it's porn stars. I was late to the party, but still got Mona Lisa and Jamie Lynn.
A masterful con.
