In a development I did not forsee, the Yanks offered Joe a base salary of $5 million, plus incentives of $1 million for reaching the playoffs, $1 million for reaching the ALCS, and $1 million for reaching the WS. Also, a team option on 2009 if the Yanks reached the WS.

And he turned it down.
